A disbarred Belleville attorney who spent more than six years in prison for his role in a gambling scandal is suing two newspapers for publishing his critics’ remarks.

Amiel Cueto alleges published statements in the Belleville News-Democrat and The Madison-St. Clair Record invaded his privacy and cast him in a false light.

Named in one lawsuit was Tom Muskopf of Belleville, for a letter published in the News-Democrat that accused Cueto of being involved a gambling scam.

The lawsuit against The Record and a man named Ed Murname contends an editorial saying Cueto attended a January meeting of St. Clair County judges was defamatory because he didn’t take part in such a meeting.

In a statement, Cueto declined comment about either lawsuit. Officials of the newspapers also declined to comment.
