Torstar Digital, the online arm of Torstar Corp., officially launched its classified site LiveDeal.ca today.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based LiveDeal is in a joint venture with Torstar Digital to provide a free online marketplace for Canada. Buyers and sellers can access the site directly through LiveDeal.ca or through Torstar’s newspaper properties, The Toronto Star, the Hamilton Spectator, The Record, and the Guelph Mercury.
Users can search for items like furniture, cars, pets, and appliances, by city, province, or ZIP code. LiveDeal requires registration, mostly basic contact information. While the initial listing is free, consumers will pay to upload photos or for premium placement. The site charges for auto listings.
Since its official launch in the U.S. in November 2004, LiveDeal’s listings have grown by 300% to feature more than 400,000 items. Torstar has taken a minority stake in LiveDeal with a $3 million investment.
