Onion Inc., publisher of the satirical newspaper The Onion and its sister publication The A.V. Club, has entered a new partnership with the Chicago Tribune Media Group through which the Tribune will take over the business operations of The Onion’s print edition in the Windy City.
While Onion, Inc. will maintain exclusive rights over all the Chicago edition’s editorial content, the Tribune will take over the edition’s advertising sales, printing and distribution.
“We have best-in-class capabilities to sell, print and distribute,” Chicago Tribune Media Group CEO Tony Hunter said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity to extend our reach among young adults and drive more results for our clients.”
Onion CEO Steve Hannah added in a statement, “This promises to be a mutually beneficial and complementary arrangement. We get to focus on what we do best — creation of award-winning comedy and pop culture content. And the Tribune gets to add a unique product to its portfolio of publications.”
Print editions of The Onion are available in eight cities, including New York and Austin.
