The Tribune Co. reported that newspaper ad revenues for the second period were up 3.5% at $421 million from last year’s $407 million.
Retail advertising revenue grew 1.8% because of the strength in home furnishings and food. Yet department stores and electronic advertising was weak. Preprint revenues also increased 4%.
National advertising revenues grew 3.9%, reaping the benefits of strong advertising in the financial, movie, entertainment and hi-tech sectors.
Classified advertising was up 7.7% due to strong gains in help wanted ads, up 16%, auto ads, up 5%, and real estate, up 4%.
Interactive revenues rose 33% to $9 million.
