No one came forward to prove George W. Bush’s alleged 1972 service in the Alabama National Guard, so Garry Trudeau ended his $10,000 “Doonesbury” contest.

Trudeau last week mailed a $10,000 personal check to the United Service Organizations, reported Lloyd Grove in his March 19 New York Daily News column. If there had been a contest winner, the Universal Press Syndicate cartoonist would have sent the money to the USO in that person’s name.

More than 1,600 people entered the contest, which Trudeau announced last month in a satirical “Doonesbury” sequence.
