The cartoon careers of John Cole and Dennis Draughon have crisscrossed.

Cole succeeded Draughon at The Scranton (Pa.) Times this spring (E&P Online, April 4) — several months after a cost-cutting Paxton Media Group axed Cole and about 80 other employees from The Herald-Sun in Durham, N.C. (E&P Online, Jan. 7). After moving to Pennsylvania, Cole continued to contribute cartoons to The Durham News.

Now Draughon — who returned to North Carolina after losing the Scranton job — is succeeding Cole at The Durham News, according to a report on EditorialCartoonists.com.

In a Q&A with the News, Draughon said he’s happy to be back in the Durham area. “My family is here,” he noted. “Most of my friends I went to high school and college with are here. I just like the area. And then there’s a whole lot more going on here than in northeast Pennsylvania.”

Draughon, who cartooned for The Scranton Times from 1989 to 2004, formerly worked for the now-defunct Raleigh (N.C.) Times.
