(SEQUIM, WASH.) Brown M. Maloney, owner of Olympic View Publishing, has sold the company’s two weekly newspapers the Sequim Gazette and Forks Forum to Sound Publishing, a community newspaper group based in Poulsbo, Wash. Also included in the sale were the company’s County Wide Classifieds and two real estate magazines serving the Olympic Peninsula in Jefferson, Clallam, Island and San Juan Counties.
In 1988 Maloney published the Sequim Gazette, and built it into an award wining 8,200 paid weekly in northern Clallam County. The Gazette has won General Excellence first place in the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association annual Better Newspaper Contest five of the last seven years. In 1990 Maloney acquired acquired the 5,000 controlled-circulation weekly in Forks, Wash., and Olympic Peninsula Homes-Land and Islander Homes-Land, two real estate magazines reaching 24,000 monthly readers.
Media Broker Dave Gauger with Gauger Media Service, Inc. in Raymond, Wash. represented Maloney in the sale to Sound Publishing.
Maloney and his wife Sara plan to maintain their residence in Sequim where they will continue active community involvement. The sale will provide Maloney more time to devote to The McClatchy Company which his family owns. The Sacramento, Calif. based company is the nation’s third largest newspaper firm. In addition to serving on The McClatchy Company board of directors Maloney serves as a board member of the Seattle Times Company.
Maloney will continue to own and operate KONP-FM and KONP-AM, ABC affiliated radio stations in Port Angeles, Wash.
In a separate transaction Sound Publishing also purchased the Peninsula Daily News from Horvitz Newspapers, LLC. The PDN also operates in the same two-county area on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Sound Publishing is owned by Black Press Group based in Victoria, British Columbia.
