Daryl Cagle’s Political Cartoonists Index Web site reports today that The United Nations is advertising an open position for a cartoonist.
However, there?s a catch — know anything about Somalia?
According to the job posting on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Web site, the UN is looking to hire a cartoonist to produce a comic book to address issues like persistent insecurity, natural disasters and widespread poverty. The UN believes a comic book would be an effective avenue to address these issues due to the low levels of literacy in Somalia.
The book, which the UN wishes to feature two cartoon characters (one male and one female), must be in Somali, no more than 12 pages, and full color. The comic will be disseminated widely within Somalia, through UN agencies? networks (UNICEF, WHO etc), educational institutions, the media and via focus group discussions and workshops.
Here?s another catch — it should be ?humorous where possible.?
Other requirements: more than 7 years? experience in design, illustrations and desktop publishing, at least 5 years? experience of working in the context of Somalia, and a professional qualification in art, design, or desktop publishing.
