Universal Press Syndicate will distribute iMedia’s digital publications to print newspapers — starting with Hollywood Previews Entertainment iMagazine, perhaps as early as this January.
The publication will be syndicated as a supplement to newspapers in the form of a free weekly CD that can be packaged in a number of formats. For instance, the CD (with the latest movie trailers) may be included in a brochure for insertion in a weekend magazine.
A release announcing the agreement stated that iMedia “will provide each participating newspaper with an allocation of advertising inventory on each disc. This will provide newspapers with the unprecedented ability to sell over the ‘print barrier’ and into the multimedia and television budgets of their existing local and regional advertisers. For the first time, newspapers can physically deliver an uncut broadcast-quality television commercial, link readers directly to the Internet, and at the same time associate their brands, products, and services with the biggest movies and celebrities in the world.”
Meanwhile, iMedia will begin developing new titles covering interactive travel, automotive, fashion, sports, and health/fitness.
“We are convinced that interactive digital media will play a major role in the future of the newspaper industry as publishers find new ways to reach younger audiences,” said Universal President Robert Duffy.
