In an interview for the weekly New York Observer, published this morning, Sen. Joe Biden, who has just announced his bid for president, may have shot himself down before he barely got off the ground.
Clearly far behind the frontrunners for the Democratic nod, Biden harshly hit Sen. Hillary Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards, particularly over their alleged weak plans on Iraq. But a comment about Sen. Barack Obama is already coming back to haunt him, judging by the immediate feeding frenzy on cable news and the blogs.
Here’s the key section, referring to Obama:
?I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,? he said. ?I mean, that?s a storybook, man.?
Some bloggers, taking Biden’s side, have pointed out that perhaps the Observer merely dropped a comma after “African-American,” changing the meaning, perhaps.
Biden later said he was not taking a shot at Obama, and merely meant he was “clean as a whistle” — explaining that this was one of his mother’s expressions. He added that he had already talked to Obama about this.
