“Steve Canyon” will be revived and updated Sept. 24 to mark the 60th anniversaries of Milton Caniff’s comic and the U.S. Air Force.
The new version of “Steve Canyon” is written and drawn by retired Air Force Master Sgt. Russ Maheras for the Air Force Times, a civilian weekly newspaper that covers the military. Set in the present day, the color strip “follows Brig. Gen. Steve Canyon as he investigates Taliban activity in a remote valley in the mountains of Afghanistan.”
Caniff did the Air Force-themed “Steve Canyon” from 1947 until his death in 1988. Prior to creating “Steve Canyon,” the cartoonist did the “Terry and the Pirates” comic from 1934 to 1946.
This year is also the centennial of Caniff’s 1907 birth.
