United Press International announced today that Investigations Editor Mark Benjamin won the American Legion’s Fourth Estate Award for uncovering the plight of hundreds of sick and wounded U.S. soldiers stuck in hot cement barracks at Fort Stewart, Ga., while they waited — sometimes for months — to see doctors.
Benjamin’s reporting led to major improvements in medical care for the soldiers.
He also did other investigative military health stories, including ones about the nearly 4,000 U.S. troops medically evacuated from Iraq for non-combat reasons. More than 20% had psychiatric or neurological problems.
The award will be presented to Benjamin Sept. 2 at the American Legion’s national convention in Nashville, Tenn.
