With Hurricane Alex no longer aiming straight for the Rio Grande Valley, Freedom Communications newspapers in the area suspended plans to produce a combined edition.
Readers had been informed of the plans to combine The Monitor, in McAllen, Texas, with its sister papers the Harlingen Valley Morning Star, The Brownsville Herald and el Nuevo Heraldo.
But on June 30, the Monitor reported that it planned only to publish “a few hours earlier than normal” on July 1. Later the same day, it told readers it expected to deliver papers by mid- to late morning, depending on drivers’ ability to safely navigate their routes.
News departments at all Valley Freedom Newspapers continued operating during the storm.
