Village Voice Media is reportedly suspending all of its syndicated cartoons, including the popular “This Modern World” By Tom Tomorrow (a.k.a. Dan Perkins).
Several Web outlets reported the cutback, including the Minnesota Independent, which stated: “Village Voice Media, the owner of a chain of alt-weeklies, including [Minnesota’s] City Pages, has suspended publication of all its syndicated cartoons. That means readers from Seattle to Ft. Lauderdale to the Twin Cities will have to go without Tom Tomorrow?s ‘This Modern World.'”
Perkins/Tomorrow confirmed the news on his web site, writing Monday: “Village Voice Media is hurting in this economy like everyone else, and their corporate response is to ‘suspend’ cartoons and (I think) all other syndicated material across the chain, said suspension to last at least through the rest of the first quarter, and quite possibly beyond.
“The papers I was running in are: Dallas Observer, New Times Ft. Lauderdale, Houston Press, LA Weekly, Minneapolis City Pages, Nashville Scene, OC Weekly, Pitch Weekly, Denver Westword and the Village Voice (though there is a small possibility of a reprieve for the latter) ?. oops, forgot one: Seattle Weekly.”
He notes that the move still leaves him with “eighty-odd papers, as well as Salon and Credo, so it?s not a fatal blow.”
