Washington Post Co. Names Jones New CFO

The Washington Post Co. has appointed Hal S. Jones its new senior VP/finance and chief financial officer. Jones most recently served as CEO of Kaplan Professional. He succeeds John Morse Jr., who is retiring at the end of the year.

Wallace Cooney has been named vice president of finance and chief accounting officer of the company. Former president of New Line Television and Consumer Products Jim Rosenthal will take Jones’ position as CEO of Kaplan.

“Hal has a tremendous breadth of experience in many parts of the Post company, both domestically and internationally, that will serve us well as our company continues to expand and diversify,” Donald Graham, chairman and CEO of the company, said in a statement.

Jones, 55, has been with the Post company for 19 years. In his most recent position as chief of Kaplan, Jones oversaw the company’s financial services, real estate, technology, and engineering divisions in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. During his career at the Washington Post, Jones has been responsible for a number of mergers and acquisitions, finance, auditing, and accounting functions. Jones spent 13 years at Price Waterhouse where he audited education, healthcare, and media clients.

Cooney joined the Post company in 2001 as controller. Prior to that, he was director of consolidation accounting and financial reporting at Gannett Co. He also worked for Price Waterhouse.
