The dark control room of WDBJ-TV is illuminated by control panels and the bevy of screens blanketing most of one wall. It’s the noon newscast, and the three female voices in the control room carry tones of excited urgency.

 

Filling one of the small screens at top is the image of Susan Spencer, a CBS network reporter sitting behind a desk in New York, fastening her microphone to promote a “48 Hours” report about a well-publicized murder investigation with ties to Roanoke.
