Journalists, Production Workers Recall Sunday Journal
The Detroit Sunday Journal strike paper folded Nov. 21, but the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News strikers who kept it going for four years share their reminiscences online.
Shawn Ellis, spokesman for the six unions that walked off their jobs in July 1995, said no new content will be added to the Sunday Journal site, but the strikers’ stories and the weekly’s archives will remain up indefinitely. The unions said they folded the paper because so many of its volunteers had been called back to work at the papers. On Valentine’s Day 1997, the unions made an unconditional offer to return to work.
