Pulitzer Newspapers Inc., which already publishes The Daily News in nearby Rhinelander, Wis., has bought The Forest Republican, a 3,500-circulation weekly in Crandon, Wis., the chain announced Tuesday.
Pulitzer Newspapers, a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Pulitzer Inc., bought the paper from Russ and Arlet Steel’s Forest Republican Publishers Inc. Terms were not disclosed. The weekly will continue to be a separate publication with its own identity, Pulitzer said, and will be printed at the Daily News plant, as it has been for the past 35 years.
In a separate transaction, Publisher Don Avery and his family sold the Times Guardian in Canyon Lake, Texas, to Don Johnson and family. Johnson is coming out of retirement to publish the paper, which has a paid circulation of 2,700 and distributes The Advisor, a mailed Total Market Coverage (TMC) shopper, to 12,000 non-subscribing households in the central Texas community near Austin.
Dallas-based Rickenbacher Media represented the Averys in negotiating the transaction. Terms were not disclosed.
