Porter To Head New Program At Southern Cal

Vikki Porter, executive editor of The Desert Sun in Palm Springs, Calif., has been
named director of the new Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism.

Opening in the fall, the new center will be housed at both the University of
Southern California Annenberg School of Communication School of Journalism and the
Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley. The program is funded by a $1.33
million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The center is dedicated to training mid-career journalists on complex topics like
new media, immigration, entertainment, and the Pacific Rim. Training will also be
offered in new technologies.

The original Knight Center for Specialized Journalism has operated for more than 10
years at the University of Maryland.

Porter, 50, was executive editor at the Desert Sun for the last four years.
Previously, she held the same position at The Olympian in Olympia, Wash. Both papers
are owned by Gannett Co. Inc.
