HAWTHORNE, NV – The Mineral County Independent News, a weekly newspaper serving the Mineral County seat of Hawthorne in western Nevada, has been sold to Battle Born Media LLC, it was announced today.
Battle Born Media LLC is a newly formed media group led by former Las Vegas Review-Journal publisher Sherman Frederick. Last week the company announced the purchase of two other Nevada weeklies – the Ely Times and the Eureka Sentinel – from Stephens Media LLC. The purchase of the Mineral County Independent News adds to this Northern Nevada cluster.
Brothers Ted, Tony, and Frank Hughes have been the owners of the Mineral County Independent-News since 1994. The Hughes brothers, however, began working at the Hawthorne paper as teenagers in the mid 1940s and early 1950s, and have a collective 181 years of service to the Independent News. They plan to retire after the sale closes June 10.
“We feel pleased and confident in selling our newspaper and commercial printing business to Battle Born Media, LLC,” stated the Hughes brothers. “With the experience of those in their group, we know that the business is in good hands. We thank them, and wish them every success in their endeavors to provide news coverage and advertising services, as well as commercial printing services to rural Nevada communities.”
The Hughes brothers were represented in the sale by JP Media Partners, a newspaper merger-and-acquisition firm based in Folsom, CA. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
“Taking the journalistic helm of the Hawthorne newspaper from the Hughes brothers is a pleasure and privilege” Frederick said. “Battle Born Media, LLC, is actively looking for similar opportunities – newspapers well served by owners looking for a fair exit.”
Kirk Kern will become the new chief operating officer of Battle Born Media and publisher of the newspapers. He is a former editor of the View neighborhood newspapers, which are published by Stephens Media.
