Wildfires Break Records at San Diego Web Site

By: E&P Staff

The wildfires weren’t the only things burning in Southern California last week. Web servers at The San Diego Union-Tribune were also hot with traffic.

With 1.3 million page views on Sunday, Oct. 26, SignOnSanDiego.com set a new record. The next day, the site served 5.4 million page views.

“To handle the traffic, we installed a brand new Cisco Router/Switch at 3 a.m. Monday morning, more than doubled our outgoing bandwidth to 60 megabits, and moved videos and forums to new servers,” said Chris Jennewein, director of Internet operations for the Union-Tribune Publishing Co.

The site also launched a news Web log with short updates about the fire, and a victim list, modeled after the paper’s Iraq casualty coverage.
