William K. Johnston has been named publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, effective May 22. He is currently publisher of the Lincoln Journal Star and regional executive for Lee publishing operations in Nebraska.

He succeeds James W. Hopson, who is retiring at the end of the year. Until retirement, Hopson will continue to serve as Lee’s vice president of publishing, overseeing other Lee papers in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

“On top of [Johnston’s] own terrific track record as an advertising manager, general manager, publisher, and regional executive throughout his long career in Lee, Bill has had an influential hand in the professional growth of eight of our current publishers, three of our top editors, and many more key managers,” Mary Junck, Lee chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

Johnston will also become a principal officer of Capital Newspapers of Madison Newspapers, which is jointly owned by Lee and The Capital Times Co.

Johnston joined Lee in Madison in 1973.

Kathleen Rutledge, editor of the Lincoln Journal Star, will act as interim publisher.
