Advance May Want URL
Wired magazine and Wired News, a daily news service, could soon be reunited, the San Francisco Examiner reported last week.
Advance Publishing, current owner of the magazine, may purchase the www.wired.com URL address from Lycos Inc. for close to $15 million, the newspaper reported.
In May 1998, the San Francisco-based print magazine was sold to Advance for $80 million. Wired Digital, a group of high-tech oriented Web sites, was picked up by the portal company Lycos in October 1998.
While neither Lycos nor Advance would confirm the sale, Lycos CEO Bob Davis told the Examiner that, ‘Hotbot is very valuable to us and Wired News is the preeminent high-tech news sources that we also value greatly.’
Davis said a hypothetical sale of www.wired.com would not automatically close the door on Wired News, which also can be reached at www.wirednews.com.
