Woodward Communications Sued for Libel over Iowa Weekly’s Letter

A Delaware County, Iowa, resort filed a libel suit against the author of a published letter to the editor of the Dyersville Commercial and against the weekly’s owner, Woodward Communications.

Albert E. Holcomb, with the Camp O’ Beach Resort near Delhi, Iowa, filed the suit June 1 in Dubuque County District Court, according to the Telegraph Herald, Woodward’s daily in Dubuque.

Two years ago the Commercial ran a letter in which an Earlville resident claimed that sewage was leaking into water and onto the beach near the resort and that someone involved with the resort should have fixed the leak, according to court documents.

Holcomb claims that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources found no leak, making the letter’s allegation false.

The Telegraph Herald reported that the weekly’s policy states that letters to the editor cannot contain libelous material and that they reflect writers’ opinions, not necessarily the editorial positions taken by the newspaper.
