For decades, it was said, only three people (other than W. Mark Felt himself) knew the identity of Deep Throat: reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and their Washington Post editor, Ben Bradlee. This week we learned that current Post editor Leonard Downie Jr. was brought into the circle a few months ago.

Last night, appearing on CNN’s Larry King show, Woodward said that he had also told his wife, Elsa Walsh, a New Yorker writer. The admission came after Bernstein once again denied that he had told his ex-wife, Nora Ephron, or son Jacob about it.

The exchange began when King asked Bernstein about his son supposedly telling a friend at camp many years ago that Felt was Deep Throat.

“He didn’t know,” Bernstein replied. “I would never have told my children or anyone in my family. The only people that knew were Bob, myself and Ben Bradlee. But his [Jacob’s] mom made a very educated guess. And I would never confirm it. “

“Did you ever tell your wife, Bob? ” King asked.

“Yes, I told my wife, Elsa Walsh, even before we married,” Woodward answered frankly. “We have a relationship of total trust. And this was such a part of my life, I just shared, and she obviously kept the secret also. “

Bernstein then added that “our wives are both the — now the — they control our papers in the event that anything happens to us, including the identity of the sources.”

A bit more news emerged from the program, with Bernstein hinting that an upcoming Watergate book might appear under their joint byline, or at least with some Bernstein billing. “It’ll probably be by both of us,” Bernstein said, though it was unclear if he meant the Deep Throat book that Woodward is already working on or another Watergate-related volume. Woodward would only confirm that the old “Woodstein” duo could probably get a publishing contract if they wanted, surely an understatement.
