“Doonesbury” cartoonist Garry Trudeau will receive the Yale School of Medicine’s Mental Health Research Advocacy Award on April 5 for his “outstanding portrayal of the readjustment issues faced by soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.”
The Yale University graduate has, for the last several years, done an acclaimed story line focusing on the B.D. character’s difficult recovery from losing a leg in Iraq.
Trudeau, whose comic is currently on a 12-week hiatus, does “Doonesbury” for about 1,400 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
The award was mentioned today on Tom Spurgeon’s Comics Reporter blog and Alan Gardner’s Daily Cartoonist blog.
