The weekly Big Timber Pioneer newspaper will be sold this summer to the Yellowstone Newspapers group.

Pioneer owners Dale and Beccy Oberly and Yellowstone group president John Sullivan made the announcement Friday.

The Yellowstone group publishes The Livingston Enterprise and other Montana publications.

Sullivan says the 1,800-circulation Pioneer will continue to be composed and published at offices in Big Timber, and printed in Livingston. A new editor-publisher will be named soon to replace the Oberlys.

The Pioneer was founded in 1888, and has published continuously since that time. The Oberlys bought the newspaper with another couple in 1976 and assumed full ownership three years later.

The ownership change is expected to take place in late July.

The Oberlys plan to stay in the Big Timber area and pursue publishing of local history books.
