R.E.M. joins the “elite” tonight, along with Patti Smith and others. Patti marked the occasion with a New York Times op-ed today, musing about whether the whole idea of such a hall of fame doesn’t fit the rock ‘n roll revolutionary mindset. Conclusion: She’ll be there. As far as I know, Van Morrison was just about the only artist who truly stayed away on principle. I could be wrong.
