As you may have heard, Sen. Chuck Hagel, the Republican from Nebrasaka, made a blistering call for accountability yesterday during a mini-debate at the Senate’s Armed Services Commitee over a resolution opposing the president’s new troop “surge” in Iraq. The resolution passed the panel by 12-9 but Hagel was the only GOPer to vote for it.

You may have seen snippets from it, including his dramatic suggestion that fellow Senators who feel it’s hard to address this issue maybe should find another job — perhaps selling shoes. Here’s an intense two minute excerpt. Even longer versions are out there.

What’s chilling, at least for me, is that many of Hagel’s remarks could just as easily apply to newspaper editorial boards, few of which have taken a strong stand in favor of reversing course in this war during the past three years and even today. Are they “failing America,” as Hagel might put it?

If you are wondering what Hagel is referring to when he rips colleagues who question the patriotism of their peers, consider that Sen. Joe Lieberman asked Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus this week if Senate resolutions condemning White House Iraq policy “would give the enemy some comfort.”

UPDATE: The Washington Post reports Friday that Hagel has caused such a stir he is now considering a race for president….
