Love him or ignore him, you have to admit: Tom Waits is a true original, and his latest CD ended up on a lot of year-end Best Of lists.

He’s got a bit more respectable over the years, but in the 1970s there was nothing fake about his boozy, Bukowski personna, I’m here to testify. In a former life, I was his editor at a certain legendary magazine and went out drinking with him more than once in Manhattan. All I’ll say is: Waits had, shall we say, a certain hard-earned authenticity.

But I better sign off here because, as Waits might put it, “the keyboard has been drinking.”

If you missed his tremendous performance on The Daily Show back in November, here is a reprise.
