The Yucaipa Companies has retained the services of James M. Naughton to act as a senior news and editorial advisor. Naughton is the retired president of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, past executive editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and former correspondent with the New York Times.

Yucaipa, which is working with the Newspaper Guild, has placed a bid on 12 of the Knight Ridder papers that McClatchy wants to unload.

“The new company we are attempting to launch must stand out not only as a profitable and efficient business but also as a leader in editorial content,” said Frank Quintero, Yucaipa’s spokesman, in a statement. “We are confident that Jim Naughton’s expertise will help us to assemble top notch editorial talent we will need to lead this venture.”
