Joni Weerheim, a 30-year veteran in the newspaper industry, has been named publisher of the Yuma Sun in southwestern Arizona, Freedom Communications Inc. announced earlier this week.
Weerheim most recently served as publisher for Eagle Media in Seneca, S.C., overseeing operations for several Edwards Publications.
She began her newspaper career as the only full-time sales representative at the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter in Iowa. She also worked for Midwest Suburban Publishing in Tinley Park, Ill., The Daily Reporter in Spencer, Iowa, and the Cherokee Daily Times in Cherokee, Iowa.
“I am very excited that Joni will be joining our organization and leading our team in Yuma,” Julie Moreno, publisher of the East Valley Tribune and Pacific region vice president for Freedom Newspapers, said in a news release.
“She brings a passion and excitement for community newspaper publishing to this role, and will serve our readers, advertisers and associates well,” she said.
Weerheim said in a news release that she’s looking forward to leading the team at the Sun.
“I believe there is a strong niche for community newspapers that make themselves relevant to the community, and I’m eager to begin working with the team to enhance what they’ve already achieved,” she said.
Freedom Communications is based in Irvine, Calif., and owns 33 daily and 77 weekly newspapers across the nation, including The Orange County Register.
