A hot-air balloon flight that organizers of a balloon festival in Yuma hoped would bring some good publicity to the event backfired when a balloon carrying journalists made a hard landing.
A photographer from the Yuma Sun newspaper and a reporter and cameraman from Yuma’s KYMA-TV were on board the balloon Wednesday when the pilot was unable to control its landing because the propane burner failed.
The balloon basket ended up smashing into a tree, bouncing hard along the ground and being dragged along a barbed-wire fence before the pilot could refire the burner and make a safe landing.
The TV crew and the photographer were banged up but weren’t seriously hurt.
The Colorado River Crossing Balloon Festival runs from Nov. 21-23.
