A preservation effort chronicled in Bill Griffith’s “Zippy the Pinhead” comic has succeeded.

According to ZippythePinhead.com, the last publicly-displayed “Doggie” head — symbol of the “Doggie Diner” restaurant chain — has been designated an official San Francisco landmark.

The repainted “Doggie” head at Sloat Blvd. and 45th Ave. is now accompanied by a plaque that includes a mention of “Zippy the Pinhead,” which is syndicated by King Features.
