Bernard A. Oravec has been named publisher of Barash Media, which includes the monthly Town & Gown magazine and The Centre County Gazette, a weekly.
Both publications are based in State College and cover Centre County.
“Town & Gown is one of the finest lifestyles magazines in America,” Oravec said. “I look forward to continuing the legacy of interesting storytelling, entertainment and community engagement.
“I am excited to lead the great editorial, sales and design team at The Centre County Gazette,” Oravec added.
“I believe that a newspaper should be a positive force for change and good throughout the local community. I look forward to providing a voice to all residents of Centre County.”
A graduate of Greater Johnstown Central Senior High School and Penn State University, Oravec returned to the State College area after serving nearly 12 years as advertising account executive and special projects manager at the Daily American newspaper in Somerset, joining the Centre Daily Times in 2004 as special publications advertising manager. Later that year, he joined Ogden Newspapers and accepted the advertising director position at the Lewistown Sentinel, where he served until promoted to advertising director at the Altoona Mirror in 2008.
“During this period, I had the opportunity to visit and serve the Centre County business and nonprofit community as a representative of these newspapers, as well as the Lock Haven Express and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, in the capacity of advertising director of Central PA Newspapers,” Oravec said.
Oravec was named publisher of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, on January 1, 2009. Over the past 10 years, he has been a vocal advocate and lobbyist on behalf of First Amendment protection, the public’s right-to know, open records, and greater government transparency in Pennsylvania. He has provided testimony before multiple state House and Senate committees on the issues. In 2013, he launched West Branch Life Magazine, and he has served as publisher of the Muncy Luminary and the East Lycoming Shopper & News. During his tenure, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette won numerous state and national awards for editorial, advertising and design excellence.
“My wife and I love the Centre region. We are very happy to be part of this vibrant and welcoming community,” Oravec said.
Oravec is a member of The State Theatre, Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society, and the Penn State Alumni Association. He is also a drummer and percussionist.
