Legendary Long Island columnist Ed Lowe died of liver cancer in Huntington on Saturday, according to published reports. He was 64.
Lowe’s popular, quirky columns were published in Newsday, the Long Island Press and Neighbor Newspapers over a career in journalism that spanned over 40 years.
The columns often detailed Lowe’s off-beat, slice-of-life encounters with his fellow Long Islanders, as well as hard-to-believe-it’s-true narratives of everyday people.
He also wrote a book, Ed Lowe’s Long Island.
Lowe joined the Long Island Press in December 2004 after establishing himself as Long Island’s preeminent storyteller with Newsday. He was the subject of a Press cover story early in his tenure, and his columns ran regularly in the Press from 2005-07.
