(AP) Steven W. Ryder, former publisher of the Medford Mail Tribune, has died at 82. He had been diagnosed with acute leukemia in August.
Ryder, a graduate of the Syracuse University School of Journalism and a World War II Air Force veteran, joined Ottaway Newspapers Inc. in 1946. He worked in New York and Connecticut before moving to Oregon in 1973 when Ottaway bought the Mail Tribune.
Jim Ottaway Jr., who retired as chairman of Ottaway Newspapers in 2003, said the paper’s previous owner, Mabel Ruhl, “”liked Steve Ryder and wanted him to move west to Medford and be her successor.””
“”He was one of a few key executives who really built our company over many years, and a longtime close associate,”” Ottaway said.
In 1982 Ryder became vice president of Ottaway’s western operations and retired in 1989.
“”Steve was truly passionate about newspapering and he spent his career giving back to the industry,”” said Grady Singletary, the current Mail Tribune publisher.
Ryder is survived by his wife, Mary.
