Hal Koontz, production director since 1998 at The Desert Sun, Palm Springs, Calif., has been promoted to production vice president at the Asbury Park Press and the Gannett Newspaper Division’s New Jersey Group, which publishes five other papers.
Among changes Koontz supervised was last year’s installation of new color presses, a $7.1 million project which allows the Sun to print 67% more full-color pages. Koontz also is directing replacement of the paper’s heating, cooling and ventilation system. In March, Gannett awarded him a President’s Ring for outstanding performance in 2003.
The 47-year-old Wilmington, Del., native joined Gannett in 1985 at that city’s News Journal. He started his career as a pressman for the Delaware County Daily Times, in Primos, Pa.
