Hawkes, Texas Newspaperman, Dead at 87

George W. Hawkes, 87, a longtime Texas newspaperman, died Tuesday after a brief illness, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Hawkes was the former publisher of the Arlington Citizen-Journal, which proceeded the Arlington Star-Telegram. “”Over three decades, from the 1940s through the 1970s, he wrote editorials by the thousands,”” according to the obituary in the Fort Worth paper. “”Columns by the thousands. Words by the million.””

Hawkes collected numerous Texas Press Association awards through the years. The publisher was a tireless promoter of the community, according to former Arlington Mayor Tom Vandergriff. The city’s main library is named after Hawkes.
