Jeannie North, Longtime Pa. Journalist, Dies at 56

J.C. “”Jeannie”” North, a member of the news staff at the Public Opinion newspaper in Chambersburg, Pa., for 30 years, died unexpectedly at her home on Feb. 1. She was 56.

The Public Opinion reported that North won Best of Gannett national awards for her reporting on domestic violence and mentally retarded adults living with their parents.

“”Jean was involved in the handling of virtually every major news story the newspaper covered in the past several decades,”” Managing Editor Becky Bennett said in the Public Opinion story about North’s death. “”Her experience and commitment to the community are irreplaceable. We’ll deeply miss her professionalism, as well as her sense of humor and sympathetic ear to anyone with a problem.””

North was a mentor to young journalists and host of the news staff’s annual Christmas party for more than 20 years.

North is survived by two sons — Jaime, a Public Opinion reporter, and Ashley.
