Kirkland, Wash.—The Kirkland Reporter has named Andrea Southern as publisher. Southern succeeds Mike Walter, who was publisher of the former Kirkland Courier and Kirkland Reporter since 2001. Southern will also serve as the regional publisher of the Kirkland, Redmond and Bothell/Kenmore Reporter newspapers.
Originally from Jamaica, Southern will be busy leading the three Sound Publishing Inc. papers with her extensive experience in the newspaper and advertising fields. As publisher of the Redmond Reporter, she guided the paper to success through many innovative and lucrative changes resulting in a number of Washington Newspaper Publishers Association awards under her leadership. She also fostered strong alliances with the city, the chamber of commerce and the rotary. She hopes to forge a solid connection with Kirkland officials and groups as well.
Southern moved to the United States to pursue a communications degree at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. After graduation, she worked as a video editor in Los Angeles, but eventually shifted gears into management as a director at an advertising agency. Due to her husband’s job at the Boeing Co., she moved to the Seattle, Wash. Area and began working in classified sales at her local paper. She quickly advanced to outside sales where she excelled and won a number of WNPA awards.
