Mike Starn remembers sitting on his grandfather’s lap while reciting headlines into a Dictaphone. He recalls his childhood excitement of seeing the words he spoke in newsprint the next morning.
That boyhood fascination eventually developed into an accomplished career in the newspaper industry, leading up to being named the new publisher of The Herald Journal.
In that position, Starn will oversee the paper’s editorial, circulation and advertising operations.
Pioneer Newspapers, a chain based in Seattle, owns The Herald Journal and several other publications in the western United States.
Starn, 48, is a fourth-generation newspaperman. His great-grandfather purchased The Meadville Tribune in Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century. His grandfather served as the paper’s editor and publisher, and his dad worked in the advertising department.
