(AP) R. Scott Martin, a freelance photographer whose work appeared worldwide through The Associated Press and other news organizations, has died of injuries from a car accident. He was 42.

Martin was pronounced dead at a hospital Tuesday night after his vehicle flipped as he swerved to avoid traffic on a highway in Charlotte County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

His most recent work included startling images of Hurricane Charley making a direct hit on Punta Gorda. Martin braved flying debris and winds of more than 100 mph to photograph the hurricane hitting the Charlotte County Airport on Aug. 13.

He had previously worked for the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal.

Martin regularly photographed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Red Sox at their spring training facility in Fort Myers.

“”Scott loved his craft and loved covering news and sports,”” said Kevin Walsh, chief of bureau for The AP for Florida. “”His spirit and creativity will live on in the images that he captured.

“”His colleagues in the industry knew him as a man whose devotion to photography was second only to his love for his family.””

Martin is survived by his wife, Patricia, the classified advertising manager for the The News-Press in Fort Myers, and daughter Claire, 7, and son Patrick, 5.
