W.R. (Ron) Fryar, owner and publisher of the Cannon Courier of Woodbury, is the new president of the Tennessee Press Association (TPA).
TPA is the trade association of the state’s daily and non-daily newspapers. It is composed of 26 daily newspapers and 96 non-daily newspapers.
Fryar succeeds Jack McElroy, editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Other officers elected at TPA’s Business Session during the annual Summer Convention, July 21-22, in Franklin were Eric Barnes, publisher of The Daily News, Memphis, re-elected vice president for daily newspapers; Doug Horne, owner of The Courier News, Clinton, elected vice president for non-daily newspapers; and John Finney, vice president of the Buffalo River Review, Linden, re-elected treasurer.
Directors elected for two-year terms are Carl Esposito, publisher of The Daily Times, Maryville, director of District 2; Jack McNeely, publisher of the Herald-Citizen, Cookeville, director of District 4; Carol Daniels, publisher of The Leaf-Chronicle, Clarksville, director of District 6; Joe Hurd, publisher of The Courier, Savannah, director of District 8 and Daniel Richardson, regional manager of Magic Valley Publishing, director of District 10.
Continuing their terms as directors are Chris Vass, public editor of the Chattanooga Times Free Press, director of District 3; William Mitchell, general manager of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, director of District 5; Keith Ponder, publisher of The Daily Herald, Columbia, director of District 7; and Scott Critchlow, co-publisher of the Union City Daily Messenger, director of District 9. The directorship of District 1 is currently vacant.
Jack McElroy will continue on the board for one year as immediate past president.
The TPA Board of Directors elected trustees to serve on the Tennessee Press Association Foundation (TPAF) Board of Trustees for three-year terms.
Re-elected trustees are: Nate Crawford, Nashville; Doug Horne and Janet Rail, Independent Appeal, Selmer.
TPAF officers elected at the July 21 TPAF Board of Trustees meeting are: Gregg K. Jones, president of Jones Media Inc., Greeneville, re-elected president, and Victor Parkins, publisher of The Mirror-Exchange, Milan, re-elected vice president.
Officers and directors of the Tennessee Press Service (TPS), business affiliate of TPA, are Victor Parkins, president; and Jana Thomasson, publisher of The Mountain Press, Sevierville, vice president. Thomasson was re-elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors during the TPS Stockholders’ Meeting on July 21. Also re-elected for a three-year term is David Cricthlow Jr., co-publisher of the Union City Daily Messenger.
Continuing to serve on the six-member TPS Board are Ralph Baldwin, COO of Jones Media Inc.; Dave Gould , owner of Main Street Media and W. R. (Ron) Fryar. TPS will elect officers in November.
