Santa Ana, Calif.– Freedom Communications’ new owner and chief executive officer Aaron Kushner will serve as publisher of The Orange County Register, effective immediately.
Kushner will oversee the day-to-day operations of Orange County Register Communications, which includes The Orange County Register, 23 community newspapers, Spanish-language newspaper Excelsior, OrangeCounty.com and Coast Magazine.
Register editor Ken Brusic served as publisher on an interim basis since April. “Ken will continue to be an invaluable leader of our institution especially as we work to strengthen the value we deliver to our subscribers and community,” Kushner said.
He continued, “The Register has several foundational strengths, particularly its quality journalism and a loyal customer base that considers our information products to be an essential part of their personal and professional lives. I am excited to join a talented team at the Register to build on that foundation and develop plans that create additional value for subscribers and advertisers.”
2100 Trust completed its acquisition of the Register and other newspapers operated by Freedom Communications on July 25. The following day, Kushner addressed Register employees saying he will introduce a “subscriber first” strategy and channel resources toward “making content richer and more valuable to subscribers.” He added he has a vision of how the Register will “win” and sustain profitability, but would not elaborate on specific plans until he could evaluate current operations and initiate discussions with management.
