Tim Smolarick has been promoted to Vice President and Group Publisher for D-R Media. Tim will be responsible for D-R Media’s Florida newspapers in Sumter, Lee, Polk and Highlands counties. Properties include a seven-day daily and weeklies with more than 120,000 circulation.
When he was 17, Smolarick worked on a road construction crew. “That was the summer job I learned I wanted to be in the newspaper business.”
Smolarick didn’t choose newspapering, though. “It chose me. I say that because I stumbled upon working at newspapers with the father of a friend. If I’d had my way I’d be in the military. But I was allergic to bee stings. I tried the Navy and the Army.
“But I’ve been all across the country,” Smolarick said. “I’ve met a million people, and I’ve never seen the same day in this business.”
Smolarick started in circulation for the Clearwater Sun, then went to a variety of newspapers, including the Denver Post, the Washington Times and moved into classified then retail advertising sales at the Tampa Tribune.
He then became the publisher of the Venice Gondolier Sun, the twice-weekly newspaper that covers Venice and its surrounding communities before becoming publisher of the daily Highlands News Sun in 2017.
D-R Media President David Dunn-Rankin said, “We are pleased to recognize Tim’s many years of accomplishments. He is the right person to lead our team to the next level.”
Tim Smolarick said, “I am excited to continue to work with David Dunn-Rankin and the leaders of our newspapers across this market. Community news gathering and driving results for advertisers remains a passion for me and D-R Media provides the perfect platform for both.”
