Russ Newton, chief operating officer for The San Diego Union-Tribune, accepted a buyout offer seven months after being named to the position. He has been an employee of the Tribune Co. since 1985.
Newton had held a number of positions within the Tribune Co., starting out as a pressroom shift supervisor, crew supervisor and trainer at the Chicago Tribune from 1985 to 1987. He later led the packaging department at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel and the production division, press and packaging areas at the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., before coming to the Los Angeles Times. In March of this year, Newton was named publisher of the Times Community Newspapers. He was appointed president of the San Diego paper May 2015.
