Aaron Wiener named Berlin bureau chief at The Washington Post

An announcement from International Editor Douglas Jehl, Deputy International Editor Jennifer Amur, and European Affairs Editor David Herszenhorn:

We are happy to announce that Aaron Wiener will become Berlin bureau chief, a key base in a rapidly changing Europe.

Aaron will arrive in Germany at a time when the transatlantic relationship forged in the decades after World War II is facing stark challenges as the Trump administration adopts a more confrontational approach to Europe. With security, trade and political ties under threat, Germany’s new leaders have said the country and its neighbors must be prepared to fend for themselves, particularly in contending with a more aggressive Russia.

With his strong language skills and prior experience in Germany, Aaron is a natural fit for this critical role. He reported from Germany for the Los Angeles Times after gaining first-hand familiarity with the country as a college student and later through the Arthur F. Burns and Fulbright fellowships for young journalists. He also reported while in Germany for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Handelsblatt and Der Spiegel.

Aaron has spent much of the last decade shaping coverage as an editor, first at Mother Jones and then at The Post, arriving in 2021 as Retropolis editor, where he helped conceive and co-edit the series on the Smithsonian’s collection of human brains that was named a 2024 Pulitzer Prize finalist. He returned to reporting last fall as a housing and development reporter on Local, picking up a beat he had previously covered with distinction for the Washington City Paper.

Aaron is a graduate of Yale University, with a B.A. in history. In addition to his advanced German, he speaks advanced Spanish and intermediate French – and even a bit of Portuguese. In joining The Post’s strong team in Europe, he will work closely with Kate Brady, our Berlin-based researcher and reporter, and with our bureau chiefs and correspondents in London, Brussels and Rome.

Aaron will join International in mid-May before moving to Berlin in mid-July.
