Courtroom reporting when you’re not quite in court

One day during R. Kelly’s trial in Brooklyn federal court, the priest who officiated the 1994 wedding of the R&B superstar and the 15-year-old singer Aaliyah was called to testify as a witness. He did so without stepping foot in New York.

The priest described the couple’s ceremony through a video call from Chicago. I was at the courthouse to report on it, but I took it all in on a 52-inch screen in a room two floors above the actual proceedings. In the midst of the pandemic, this is a new way of court reporting.
