Cox Media Group establishes memorial scholarship fund and internship in honor of Jovita Moore

Cox Media Group (“CMG”) today announced the establishment of the Jovita Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund and Internship, in partnership with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The scholarship honors Moore, the late WSB-TV news anchor who passed away in October after a nearly seven-month battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

CMG is supporting the Scholarship Fund and Internship with a $20,000 investment. The program will help support three diverse students who are passionate about the field of broadcast journalism and can help extend Jovita Moore’s legacy.

“Jovita loved people and cared for the community. She championed diversity and lived our mission — to inform, entertain, and elevate our audiences and community,” said Dan York, CMG president and CEO, as he reflected on Jovita Moore’s legacy. “It’s our honor and privilege to support three scholarships to continue that mission, with a focus diversity in local broadcast news.”

Jovita had been with Channel 2 Action News since 1998, where she anchored evening newscasts. She was known for her contributions around the community and as an active, long-term member of the NABJ. Along the way, she helped shape the lives and careers of countless aspiring journalists.

“There is only one Jovita Moore,” said Justin Farmer, longtime WSB co-anchor and friend of Moore’s. “We’ll love her forever and will continue to honor her, not only at WSB, but across our communities through initiatives like this scholarship program.”

Cox Media Group is partnering with NABJ to launch and administer the scholarship. To be eligible, students are required to submit a 500-word essay, a resume and work samples documenting proven leadership and passion for journalism, and multiple references. In addition, students must demonstrate financial need, have a 3.0 GPA and be a U.S. citizen when they apply. The application process will open in early October and can be accessed at NABJonline.org under Scholarships, Fellowships & Internships.
